Work in progress in my studio
Concept
I “carve“ the pieces out of the canvas by devoting time to my senses in the process (of doodling, feeling, playing, visiting and revisiting, trying, withdrawing images from one’s brain, subconscious and conscious process of )
THE PIECES TELL YOU THE STORY and not the other way around. Whenever I am trying to tell a story via what I paint, it becomes uninteresting for me and it loses. I do the drawing/painting.
The Drawing/painting does the storytelling, not myself. The piece becomes dead to me if I’ve imbued too much intentionality into the story telling, there is nothing to respond back to me. I’ve told the whole story, it has no answer. It has become uninteresting, dead.
Fascination for the art piece as an interactive piece, a game, a puzzle that could/ should be seen, taken in from all 4 different sides/ angles.
The idea of a story being told if you sequence it clockwise in 4 turns.
The creative process as the vehicle to endless joy:
VEHICLE KEYS – Doodling as the ignition/ starting point to the process/ birth of the piece.
This consistently gives me the sense that there is, with each new piece, something to learn about myself, my inner core, the world around me and my perception of that same world rather than establishing/ replicating concrete themes, topics, goals and references to construct that same piece.
DESTINATION – Storytelling that interest, prickle and arouse me to keep digging, keep asking myself questions in the pieces for which I might not have answers. Once the piece gets to a point where there are some sort of directions possible, storytelling unfolds and opportunities to draw from the conscious and subconscious happen in a way that keeps me interested, curious, hungry for what could happen. This is where a big part of the pleasure comes from.
VEHICLE SPECS – The improving of techniques and color studies, light and shadow.
Understanding color theory, basic principles of perspective, contrast, light/shadow, framing, composition, depth, movement, etc, allows continuous sense of growth, increased possibilities, greater realism and wider palette of technical options to render the worlds I am trying to create.
THE FUEL – Habit of making yourself do it every day which has in the meantime turned into a need and a pleasure.
The passion, hobby, flow, but also the purpose, daily job and long-term project.
The body/ hands/ brain – Familiarization with the tools/materials.
The ability to conceive volumes, shapes in a concrete way through the visualization of the world around me.
